Are you a SNAP beneficiary? Then finding gas stations that accept EBT is a big plus if you want to grab candy, bread, or a bag of chips on the go instead of going to the grocery store. At least, you can save time and gas! In this article, we’ll list all the gas stations that accept EBT near you.
About 42 million Americans receive SNAP benefits every year. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance program (SNAP), which is a government-run program, aims to supplement children’s food budgets and meet the nutritional needs of low-income families. To ensure wider reach and smooth administration, SNAP runs at the state level.
To become a SNAP beneficiary, you will need to apply through your current state. Income and resource limits are the main qualifying criteria. Once you qualify, the government opens a benefits account with your details. Every month, your SNAP funds are added to your account.
For convenience and easy access to funds, SNAP recipients are issued Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) cards, which work like a regular credit card or debit card with a chip. The card can be used anywhere to buy approved items from authorized retailers.
Without a PIN number, you cannot use a debit card. Federal law does not protect you from unauthorized charges on benefits cards. Call immediately if you’re aware of a lost or stolen credit card to protect your money.
The big question is: are there gas stations that accept EBT?
Short Answer : Places such as 76, BP and Chevron accept EBT near me.
EBT funds can only be used to purchase eligible products. Most gas stations that accept EBT have convenience stores where you can buy approved items like cereal, bread, dairy products, snacks, energy drinks, and any other household food or item on the go while traveling.
You can’t use SNAP benefits to fuel your car or purchase other items such as toiletries, prepared food, tobacco, lottery tickets or over-the-counter medicines. Be prepared with an alternative payment method to fuel your car and purchase any non-eligible items.
SNAP beneficiaries that receive Temporary Aid for Needy Families, (TANF), are an exception to this rule. You can use your EBT card to pay fuel and get cash back at gas stations.
Can You Use EBT Cards at Gas Stations?
You can use your EBT card at gas stations accepting SNAP money as long as you have purchased approved items. But like any other authorized EBT outlets, you are limited to what you can buy with your SNAP benefits.
Only staple household food items that you take home and cook as part of a meal, snack or meal can be paid for. This includes groceries and bags of chips that can be taken with you on the move. Also eligible are fresh fruits and dairy products, such as cheese.
EBT cards will not work at the pumps, coffee shops and restaurants as well as food counters, delis, food courts, and sandwich shops within gas stations. If you try to purchase non-eligible items, your order will be denied.
You have the option of using other payment options, such as credit cards or debit cards at gas stations. Not all contactless payment options such as Apple Pay or Google Pay work at the pumps.
Can you not buy these items with EBT cash at a convenience store?
SNAP restricts what you can buy with your money to staple foods that are prepared at home and eaten in a balanced meal. You should know what you can buy at a gas station or convenience store with your EBT cash to avoid embarrassment.
You can’t purchase these items with EBT cash at a convenience-store:
- TANF beneficiaries are not eligible for gasoline
- Alcohol
- Hot and ready-to-eat food
- Cigarettes
- Medicine
- Lottery Tickets
- Vitamins
- Pet Food
List of food items you can buy with your EBT cash:
- Bread and cereals
- Fish, Poultry, and Meat
- Dairy products
- Fruits, Vegetables
- Food for the family: Seeds and plants that are able to grow into food

Eligibility For Food Assistance And Using An EBT Card at Retailers
The federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance program (SNAP), is the largest federal nutrition assistance program. SNAP gives eligible low-income people and families an Electronic Benefits Transfer card that is loaded monthly with credits so people can make purchases of authorized goods.
To be eligible for SNAP benefits you will need to meet their eligibility requirements. These include food stamps qualifying income or monthly income limits. EBT Cards will require applicants and their households to show proof of income and assets.
When you fill out your SNAP form, you can visit a county food stamp office and request assistance. There are food stamp offices across the country — such as the Louisiana food stamp office, Wisconsin food stamp office, Wilcox county food stamp office, and Ashtabula county food stamp office. Online information is available about the benefits rules and application process as well as the types of food you can buy through the program, income requirements and applicant categories.
If you have been approved for food assistance, an EBT Card will be issued to you. This card works in a similar manner as a debit or credit card. You can load the benefits each month onto your card and use it at certain grocery stores and food stores as well as retailers and gas stations with stores. You cannot purchase certain types and categories of food. This is why you will need to research what you can buy.
You can use your EBT Card in 50 states including the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and Guam. Use a retailer locator with your zip code to locate a merchant that accepts EBT card.
This blog also contains a list of gas stations in America that you can use your EBT cards benefits. It includes information about West Virginia food stamp stores and Wisconsin food stamps shops, Texas food stamps store, Louisiana food stamps store, and a mini-mart/gas station convenience shop.
Keep in mind that you may not be able to purchase certain food items at SNAP retailers, such as lottery tickets or alcoholic beverages.
Many families in the USA rely on food assistance and food stamps benefits payments to provide basic food and dietary needs. They can access fresh foods and perishable food, as well as other nutritional options.
