What happens if you run out of hotspot data with Verizon?
If you have opted into this service through your Verizon account, Safety Mode will be activated when you reach the limit of data on your Hotspot.
Safety Mode also allows you to use your device and data without incurring overage fees. However, it will drastically slow down your internet connection, even for the most basic tasks.
You will be charged extra for every GB of data you exceed on your monthly plan if you disable Safety Mode or turn it off.
Verizon Data Boost can help you until your monthly Verizon bill cycle resets.
What does Verizon Data Boost do?
Verizon Data Boost lets you get your speed back to normal 4G LTE connection when you are in Safety Mode or if your speed has been significantly lowered.
It’s easy to add the Data Boost, provided you are the account manager/owner.
You can add Data Boost to your Verizon account through the My Verizon website or app.
If you are on a Verizon standard plan, you can go to Manage Plan > Get more Data and choose between 1GB or 5, depending on your preference.
Similar to the above, if your prepaid plan includes data, you can access My Verizon’s “Add Data” section and choose to buy Data Boost.

Verizon Data Boost may be necessary in certain situations.
- Prepaid Plans – Some prepaid plans have a limit on data. Once you exceed that, your speed drops to 128Kbps. Verizon Data Boost is a service that will allow you to get back to your high-speed connection, even if your bill has been reset.
- Shared Data Plans – If you exceed your monthly data limit and your data speed throttles to 128Kbps, your bill will reset. This includes email basic tasks. Data Boost will restore your 4G LTE speed and allow you to use your Mobile Hotspot whenever you need it.
- Unlimited plans with unlimited hotspot data – When you use your premium Mobile Hotspot data in Unlimited Plan, your speed drops to 600Kbps and your bill cycle resets. Data Boost can bring your speed back to normal.
It is important to know whether the network is congestion at the moment. If it is, you may be placed in the back of line and throttled, while priority goes to other customers.
What is the cost of Verizon Data Boost?
Verizon Data Boost costs $15 per 1GB for eligible plans. You can also purchase a 5GB Data Boost at $35.
